Susan is a Kentucky native who felt the impacts of the loss of open space on a personal level at an early age. As a result, she has worked on land use and conservation issues in a variety of capacities and from multiple perspectives throughout her career.
Susan received her undergraduate degree in Geography from the University of Colorado and J.D. from Vermont Law School. She served as staff counsel with Vermont Land Trust before returning to Louisville, her hometown, to work as a special assistant to the Jefferson County Judge/Executive. She directed open space, historic preservation, local food and brownfield redevelopment efforts in her ensuing sixteen years with local government. She serves as a Trustee of Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest and as a board advisor to Kentucky Natural Lands Trust, with a particular interest in large landscape conservation. Rediscovering a love of photography, she is exploring the power of the lens as a means of learning and communicating about Kentuckians’ relationship with their land. Currently, she is the research coordinator for the Kentucky Documentary Photographic Project.
