Ann Hershfang was undersecretary of transportation for  Massachusetts (1983-88) and board member of the Massachusetts Port Authority (1974-81) and the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority (1988-98).

From 2009-14, she chaired the Oversight Council for the Massachusetts $3B Accelerated Bridge Program, which aims to repair 200 structurally deficient bridges over 8 years. In 1990, she co-founded WalkBoston, the first pedestrian advocacy group in the United States, and she continues to serve on the board. She is now retired but still an aggressive advocate for walking matters and neighborhood matters in Boston’s South End, where she has lived for 54 years.
