As project leader for urban farm site development at the Urban Farming Institute of Boston, Barbara Knecht turns abandoned lots into commercial urban farms. From site acquisition through construction, she is building social infrastructure and productive open space in urban neighborhoods. She is a principal at Strategies For Cities/Kruckemeyer and Knecht.

With an MArch from Columbia University, she joined the NYC Mayor’s Office of Construction, the start of her fascination with infrastructure and urban systems. In her next two positions for the City of New York, she conceived and managed design and development of housing and service programs for homeless individuals and families, and developed health care and open space projects. She continued this work in private practice. Knecht’s articles and papers have appeared in Architecture, Architectural Record, Design Book Review, Frontiers, Applied Ergonomics, and the Enterprise Quarterly. She also served as Director of Design at the Institute for Human Centered Design and co-directed an international, experiential academic program, IHP Cities in the 21st Century, teaching the systems of cities through the lens of people, planning and politics.
