Bernard R. Gifford is the founding faculty chair of the University of California/California State University Joint Doctoral Program in Leadership for Educational Equity and director and chief instructional officer of the UC/CSU Consortium on Leadership for Educational Equity.

He is a professor in Mathematics, Science, Engineering, and Technology at UC Berkeley. Much of his recent research on computer-mediated collaborative learning and reducing achievement gaps was conducted in the Distributed Learning Workshop, which he cofounded in 2001.

Prior to this, Gifford was vice president of education at Apple Computer and Chancellor’s professor and dean of the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley. He served as vice president and professor of Political Science and Public Policy at the University of Rochester, resident scholar at Russell Sage Foundation, and deputy chancellor and chief fiscal officer of the NYC Public Schools. Gifford is widely published in areas ranging from applied physics to public policy.
