Douglas Meffert
Originally from San Antonio, Texas, Doug lives in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he is a vice president of the National Audubon Society and executive director of Audubon Louisiana.
He leads Audubon Louisiana’s programming, which includes large scale coastal restoration and beach stewardship, urban wildlife corridors, bottomland hardwood conservation, and activist engagement. In addition, he leads the management of the Paul J. Rainey Sanctuary, Audubon’s oldest and largest sanctuary established in 1924. This year, five whooping cranes made the Rainey Sanctuary their home, marking an important step in reestablishing this endangered species in Louisiana.
Doug also works on international collaborations, including conserving critical mangrove habitats in Panama Bay to improve wildlife, flood control and quality of life in the face of urban expansion of Panama City. During his Loeb Fellowship Doug had a joint Lincoln-Loeb Fellowship.
