Norma Burns served two terms on the Raleigh City Council and practiced Architecture for 20 years in her own firm, Burnstudio Architects, PA. As an assistant professor at the North Carolina State University College of Design, she taught architecture design studio and cotaught a combination design studio of Architecture and Landscape Architecture students in the design of campus and public spaces.

Retiring in 1998, she purchased a small farm in Chatham County, NC, where she specialized in organic and heirloom produce and lavender, including lavender products. In 2018, through an online essay application process, she selected a young family of aspiring organic farmers to maintain the farm and carry on its original intent. The farm now carries an Agricultural Conservation Easement issued by the Triangle Land Conservancy.
