As of June first, 2018, Steve Demos is officially retired. Of course, this is the third time he’s done so, but as it’s his 85th year, he thinks this time it’s for good. His house on Peaks Island, Maine, started in 1993, is now at the 95 percent complete mark, but, of course, has no certificate of occupancy. When the summer people have finally deserted for sunnier spots, he enjoys beach picnics and small village life. Since his Loeb year, Demos taught a studio at the GSD for several years while working as chief architect at the state housing agency until retiring. He worked for the Sandinistas in Nicaragua for a while; worked for a sub-subcontractor, Fort Point Associates, on the Big Dig; retired again; and went to work for the Institute for Human Centered Design until recently.
