When Jim Stockard ’78 retired as curator of the Loeb Fellowship in May 2014, his valediction was a scorecard of how we are doing at keeping the promise of the Housing Act of 1949: a decent home for every American family. His rating: we weren’t.

In his Loeb Lecture “Affordable Housing: It’s Just (A) Right,” Jim argued that we have plenty of money, and if we are failing, it’s a matter of political will and values. He proposed a series of steps to achieve full housing for Americans.

Jim is back this year as interim curator of the Fellowship. More than 10 years after his Loeb Lecture, the questions he asked and the solutions he offered are more urgent than ever. Then as now, at the root is the fundamental question, “What kind of nation do we want to be?”
