Mark Lamster
Mark Lamster is the architecture critic of the Dallas Morning News and a professor in the College of Architecture Planning and Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Arlington. As the architectural voice of Dallas’s paper of record, Lamster has championed progressive urban planning policy, the preservation of the built environment, and higher design standards for all citizens in writing that blends narrative, criticism, and advocacy.
Lamster has been hailed for his “beautiful mind” by D Magazine, which has named him the best critic in Dallas for three consecutive years. He received the Robert W. Decherd Award for Civic Journalism from the Dallas Morning News and the Dunnigan Media Award from the Greater Dallas Planning Council. He is the author of several books, including an upcoming biography of the late architect Philip Johnson, which will be published by Little, Brown.
During his Fellowship year, Lamster is studying the application of urban planning policy and development tools in metropolitan centers, with a special focus on affordable housing and gentrification. He will also be examining the potential of landscape architecture to be a form of urban revitalization.
