Welcome to Cambridge! It is a wonderful place to live with kids — bike-friendly streets, tons of playgrounds, world class museums and beaches accessible via public transportation, and an unusually high number of ice cream shops. When it comes to your kids’ day-to-day lives, Cambridge may also be different from what you’re used to. Childcare costs are high, and the public school system, though excellent, can be tricky to navigate. But, with a bit of planning, the Loeb year can be as magical and memorable for kids as it is for their parents.
Cambridge Public Schools
Cambridge has excellent public schools and reserves spaces every year for children of fellows and temporary faculty.
Preschool, Daycare, and Babysitting for Younger Children
- Harvard resources
- Campus Child Care — Harvard affiliated child care centers
We encourage fellows with children to brainstorm together and share information about babysitting needs and advertise with Harvard, Lesley University, etc. Evening events are common and having childcare options is very helpful.

Family members of Loeb Fellows, whom we call Loeb Affiliates, fall under the Harvard Sponsored Role (HSR) Policy, which determines what University resources spouses/partners and adult children/family members in residence have access to.
Please contact Rosana Restrepo in the Loeb Office to register family members in residence as HSRs within the Harvard system. Please send their name, date of birth and email.
